Refit Project 2026

S/Y Aprilia Refit Plan: A DIY Opportunity or Would You Rather Wait for a Fully Restored Classic? The Choice Is Yours.

I’m often asked: ‘What’s the exact condition of the yacht and what needs doing?’ As both a shipwright and sailor, I believe in complete transparency. A wooden yacht is a living organism – she requires care, dedication and… proper work.

My sales strategy is straightforward: S/Y Aprilia is listed for sale during the refit process. The current price reflects the yacht’s actual condition – that she needs deck sealing, rigging service, and interior cosmetics. It’s an opportunity for someone who wants to buy a unique yacht at a lower price and complete the work themselves.

However, I’m not sitting idle. I’m refitting the yacht according to schedule to prepare her for the summer season. Each ticked item on the list below, every fixed issue, and every replaced component increases the yacht’s value.

To put it plainly: The more I complete, the higher the final price will be.

If you dream of owning this unique Arvid Laurin classic at an attractive price – now is the moment. If you’d rather wait for a yacht ready to cruise ‘turnkey’ – you’re welcome later, but the price will be correspondingly higher.

Work Schedule – Winter/Spring 2025: Below I’m publishing my ‘battle plan’. These are works I’m currently undertaking or have planned for the coming weeks.

I recommend downloading the file from the link below. Reading or editing it on your own computer will be easier and more legible. However, for those who don’t like downloading files, have good eyesight, and enjoy reading spreadsheets on their phone, I’ve also included the work plan table below 🙂 Just remember this table has many columns. To see all of them move cursor to the right (below table).

How to read this Scope of Work?

For a better understanding all records/works have one the of three priority numbers
Priority 1 – do that before sailing in June. In a sample below it’s “Front hatch – fix leaking”, 20 working hours, we have Sika, need to buy some wood
Priority 2 – “nice to have” before sailing but you can do that later, like oiling a deck (painting). 24 working hours need. We have cleaner, need to buy oil.
Priority 3 – “from good to great” – like make a project and build a doghouse. Project can be done at home during winter. 30 working hours needed. You will also need wood and windows to make your project life 🙂
In this excel file you can use a filter to check only work with a specific priority – these small, black triangles in upper menu

How to read SCOPE of WORK
Column “Expected Working Hours” – you know what it means. Italian workers cost 20-40 eur/h. Polish carpenter costs ca 23 eur/h. Owner work costs zero if you know how to do a few simple tasks.
Column “Materials Onboard” – shows what we already have in Licata
Column “Materials to buy” shows what has to be bought
Additionally:
– crane to install the mast on the boat
– perhaps a shipyard to make antifouling. I can make it later.
– 1-3 batteries. Last one was dead. Minimum 1 needed. Not a fortune
– Re-wiring: Should we do a complete rewire, or leave the temporary solution as it works now
Engine – totally checked. Many parts were exchanged for new ones. Just do everything now to avoid thinking about it for the next 10 years. We made the final checks a few days ago. If you want to see how it works now, please send me your WhatsApp number.
I’ll ship this engine this week to Italy and pick it up in the second half of May. Next I’ll mount it, sail 0.5 nm to shipyard, use its crane to install main mast and then I can sail out.
Plans:

1) Sell her and forget. I’m the owner of yacht delivery company. https://skipperdelivery.com . This may I have:
a) Sicily -> Denmark delivery. Ongoing
b) 2 x Miami -> Panama deliveries. Mid May
c) Hanse 575 Marmaris -> Kiel. Starting in next 7 days
d) some minor deliveries like Belgium-Brunsbuttel
I can focus on my Aprilia or enjoy life sailing and making money. Be a carpenter and electrician or skipper in the Bahamas.
Now, to install the engine I have to go to Sicily in mid-May. It means I cannot go sailing in Miami or even take this Hanse delivery. That’s why I prefer to sell her quickly.
2) If I don’t sell her in May – I’ll have to put more work into this project
I can finish her just to sail away from marina in June. Next, sail and from time to time drop anchor to complete some work. After that, raise the price because she will look much nicer, everything will be painted and shining, etc .
Or maybe better, I’ll look for somebody who can finish, sail, and sell this project. Now two Norwegians are interested in shares. But as I said, I prefer to sell her cheap and forget because no time for other activities

LEGEND – Who is doing the job?

  • C = Carpenter (Professional Shipwright)
  • EL = Certified Electrician
  • M = Mechanic / Rigger
  • Local = Local Contractor / Yard
  • Service = Authorized Service Point
  • Owner = Works performed by the Crew

Note: “Materials Status” indicates if we already have parts onboard or if they are scheduled for purchase.
